Printing Workshop

This is work done in our printing skills days. Since the beginning of term we have spent a day each week in the skills areas; rotating each two weeks so that we have become familiar with each area. We are now on our last Photography day; after that the series of workshops are finished.

Sculpture and Machine Shop workshops

The top two are plaster pieces, and there was another piece; a cast of a draining board, but that is not quite finished!
The wood and paper piece came about because I wanted to learn how to cut through a book with a band saw. I now know! Call this my eco piece!  I now have two less logs for my wood burner!
The bottom piece is approx 10" dia. It is made from a sheet of aluminium hammered and then sand blasted.  I think that I will be visiting that sand blaster again. (the shadow in the photo is supposed to be there!)
We are So, So, lucky to have access to all those machines.
I also made a little perspex postcard shelf for my studio space, which desperately needs some organisation!
We will be in the print room for the next skills workshop.
For the rest of the time I am working on an essey on Minimalism which is a little up hill, though discovered a brilliant American review 'Bombsite'. You might need to subscribe.
I have also just stretched a canvas for a large painting...

Inspired by Beatriz Milhazes's techniques

In our painting workshop we looked at Beatriz Milazes paintings and we leanrt to make our own acrylic stencils that we then applied to our paintings. My paintng is the right way up in my file, however it does not want to download to the blog the corect way up!

Encaustic painting (using wax coloured with oil paint and wax crayons). We gained inspiration from Jasper Johns work. I would like to experiment more using collage and fabric with this technique!

Painting workshop

We looked at the work of Simon Hantai and experimented using his techniques.

Last weeks College project: 05.10.11

This is a self portrait titled 'BILLS'. It is in response to a weeks project where we had to create a drawing that was outside of our comfort zone!

Sketchbook pages

These are a few examples of work in my summer sketchbook. I have not restricted myself by following a particular style, but have rather enjoyed a more playful approach to using materials and exploring ideas. I chose ladders from being a little obsessed with the restraints of Health and Safety rules surrounding ladders; also because of my on going interest in objects. My work so far on the topic “connection” has been lightweight. The straight line drawing of ladders I found frustrating!

Connection - My holiday piece of work.

Ladder - Woodblock print, and ink/paint.
I have been exploring ladders. The structure of a ladder in itself has connections. Most of my experiments have been in my sketch book, and have exploring different ways of using the an image of a ladder. I also have been taking photographs of different ladders 'In Situ'.
